Parakeet Care FAQs

When people mention “parakeets,” they usually mean the common parakeet. There are actually over 100 different varieties of parakeets! These adorable and fun little parrots are cute, affectionate, and cuddley. And, despite their small size, they also have lots of personality! A local Deer Park, TX veterinarian explains parakeets and provides some basic care suggestions below.

Parakeet Basics

There are about 115 parrots on the Psittacidae branch of the parrot family tree. The common parakeet is native to Australia. Polly can wear many different feather colors, but the most common are green, blue, and yellow. (Fun fact: Polly’s Latin name, Melopsittacus undulatus, means “songbird with wavy lines.” This likely describes the black wavy line pattern found on parakeets’ bodies and faces.) Polly can survive for 10-12 years with adequate care and grow up to 7 inches long.

What Kind of Cages Do Parakeets Need?

Whatever species of bird you purchase, she will require a decent, comfy cage. Getting the right cage may very well be half the battle! Here are a few tips:

• Bigger Is Better: For one parakeet, get a cage of at least 18″ x 18″ x 18″. For two birds, the minimum is 30″ x 18″ x 18″. Our advice? Get the largest cage you can fit into the space you’re working with.)
• Pick The Proper Shape: Different birds need different cages. find out which option is ideal for your bird. parakeets need a cage with both vertical and horizontal room.
• Consider Access: consider cages with certain features. These could be slide-out trays, removable tops, or doors that open for convenient access. These are usually well worth the additional expense.
• Choose The Right Spot: Choosing the correct location for your birdcage is also critical. You should avoid placing it in drafty or direct sunlight. Polly will be uncomfortable if she is too exposed, and she may become lonely if she is too isolated. Often, the corner of a den or family room works well. You must ensure that your pet’s cage is in a room with good air quality, as fumes can make your pet very unwell.
• Consider Making a Stand: You do not need to purchase an actual stand; instead, you can use a piece of furniture. Just be careful if you have a cat. Fluffy probably won’t mind having a direct view into the birdcage, but your bird may not be happy about that!
• Consider Safety: Pay attention to bar spacing. These should be less than half an inch apart. For some birds, 5/8″ is the maximum recommended size. Also, examine the cage carefully to ensure there are no small fragments or sharp edges that could harm your pet. Review the cage information and determine what it is built of. Stainless steel and powder-coated steel are ideal choices. Avoid anything containing zinc or lead, as they are hazardous to birds.

We highly recommend it. Parakeets love spending time with their friends. Polly would be happiest with a buddy. Just keep in mind that if you only get one bird, it will bond with you. You’ll need to spend quality time with her every day to ensure she does not become lonely. If you get two birds, they will form a strong attachment with one another.
